Things should be made as simple as possible, but not any simpler. ~Albert Einstein

What can we do for Africa?

This is a question that I have been asking myself quite a bit lately!  We have many Africans in our congregation here in Perth.  Many of them are from Zimbabwe.  Obviously, their homeland has been in the news quite a bit recently.  Click on the link for the latest on unrest in Zimbabwe.

We also know and work with many from Sudan.  I ran across a recent pictorial article that gives you some idea of the problems facing Sudan. Thanks to Matt for sharing this with me!

What can we do about these and other problems?  Most of the time I feel like the answer is ‘Nothing’.  And of course, with the distractions of my modern life, it’s easy to think that it’s someone else’s problem.   But when I stop and think a bit about it, I think there are some things each of us can do.

While I don’t have a great deal of faith in our government, they are an option here.  Write your representatives and tell them that you want your government to do something about the Mugabe government, or any of the other issues.  If you don’t live in the US, find out how to contact your representatives.  If enough of us make our feelings known, maybe we can convince our governments to get to work on these issues.

Reach out to missionaries in these countries and try to get involved in some of the awesome work that is going on.  Many groups are doing a lot to share Christ with those who desperately need a message of peace!  Maybe you could even make a trip yourself.

Finally, and most importantly, Pray!

The greatest thing we can do is constantly petition our Father on behalf of these countries and the souls that live there.  God can do things beyond our ability to understand or even believe.  Say a prayer for the suffering each day this week.

Great post and good reminder. It can be so discouraging to constantly read about all the bad stuff that is happening and to feel like we are powerless.

Thanks for reminding us of the power we do have, both earthly and heavenly!

This is an issue I’ve been thinking a lot about myself over the past few months. One of the campus ministries here at Tech decided to raise awareness about the issues in DR Congo this past semester, and we decided praying every night at 11:00 for the DRC was probably the best thing we could do.

I should add that a major component of those prayers, for myself and many others I know, is for God to show us how we can be used to help.

Your post reminded me of something I saw a few months ago. It is a short video from Gorilla Pictures. You can preview it here: http://worshiphousemedia.com/index.cfm?hndl=details&tab=MM&id=8180

    Prayer is a powerful thing.
