Shadows of Christ~ Creation of Eve

Inspired by the upcoming Mother’s Day, I thought it was about time for the next Shadows of Christ entry, which is focused on the mother of us all.

Have you wondered about the creation of Eve?  I mean, it’s a pretty weird, and seemingly random story, right?  God creates a man, decides that he needs a mate, so He puts him to sleep, removes one of his ribs, and creates a woman!?  I will confess that I have never understood this story.  Not that I’ve lost sleep over it or anything, but it’s never made much sense to me.  That all changed after a short conversation with a friend of mine in Kentucky named Lawrence.

Consider the key elements of this story, found at the close of Genesis 2.  God caused the man to go into a deep sleep.  He cut into the man’s side and what came out of that wound was fashioned into a bride fit for the man.  When the man awoke, he and his bride became one flesh.

Now, think about the parallels between this story and the Christ.  Christ died on the cross.  Death is really the ultimate ‘deep sleep’.  He was wounded in the side by having a spear thrust into Him.  The Bible says that out of that wound flowed blood and water.  To the Roman soldiers, it signified that Jesus was dead and that His bodily fluids were seperating.  But to us who know the full story, we know that God used the blood and the water to create the church, the bride of Christ.

Three days later, Christ awoke from His ‘deep sleep’, and He and His bride are now one.  We are born into Christ through water and the Spirit as Ephesians tells us. And we know that the blood of Christ cleanses us of our sins.  We are the bride of Christ.  We are one with Him, and together we rejoice in that relationship!

So the next time you are reading or thinking about the creation of Eve, just remember that your God is pointing you to your Redeemer!
